Blog #8

Why are we never satisfied with entertainment today?  Why do we crave more, more, more?  It isn't enough to simply see someone get shot, it takes getting shot in each appendage and then the final kill to get us going.  It isn't enough to see two people having sex, what really gets us stirred up is five or six people.  Why is this?  We can see literally anything we could ever possibly want to via Internet, TV, etc.  Everything's already been done, so to shock the viewers things need to go one step further.  For example, WHY is there seven Saw movies?  How do people come up with this stuff?  The most logical answer would be to take writers from various insane asylums but scarily, I don't think that's the case.  That's what everyday writers come up with to entertain their everyday audiences.  That's what will sell the best.  Writing such as the Hunger Games or The Lottery have entertainment value because these are games played with peoples' lives.  And we value nothing above life, if we're honest.  I'm rereading the Hunger Games again firstly because I wanted to refresh my memory for our upcoming test but also because I truly was into the book.  I found it interesting, suspenseful, intriguing.  Isn't that kind of sick?  I feel like our world is going to come to a stand still and be so intensely boring for the human race because there simply won't be any farther to push the limits.  Seriously, it can only get so far.  And when you already write, publicize, show movies about human lives played with in the most screwed up ways, where will we get our entertainment?

  1. I think in some sick way it is a chance for people to see things that interest them. Want to watch a serial killer first hand? Watch Mr. Brooks. Want to see people get raped and tortured? Watch Hostel. We love this stuff because we would never get to see it otherwise and it's so weird. I said in my blog that it's because it keeps us on our toes. Our lives are boring so why not watch the horrible events of a character getting maimed on vacation. Maybe we will take it too far, but I think there are so many outspoken people now that will find it sick that it may never get to the point of the Hunger Games. But who knows. Everyone is at least a little bit curious.

  2. I agree with Megan maybe we like this stuff bc its like a taboo in our society. Its ok because its fake if not then it would be sick. We cant really see this kinda stuff any where else.

  3. I agree with both or you as well. The scary part is we watch these things because they are "fake," or are they? If you think about it, these things happen all the time, (Serial killers, rapings, school shootings). Just these few of these topics occur on a daily basis and it is happening more and more. So even though most of us find it entertaining because we would never do it, some people might be that into these sick crimes and such that t.v. and movies only help them pursue these horrible crimes. In a way movies like saw or hostel desensitize us subconsciously. Why do we love watching these kinds of things even though we know its sick?

  4. People do enjoy watching movies with sick violent acts in them and they crave more twisted ways of killing but I honestly think for most people if that was reality shows where people were getting killed they would not watch it. Well atleast for me I wouldn't watcha show like the Hunger Games. I would not be able to watch people fight for their lives and kill other people in the process of it. But then again I don't really like killing or violent movies so that may be why. When it comes down to it I do think MOST people have a heart and would not want to see people they know of even strangers killing each other on live television, but who knows I may be wrong.
